BEHAVIOUR OF Ti IN AS-CAST MEDIUM MANGANESE AUSTENITIC STEEL

The majority of Ti is found to be preferentially precipitated in the form of TiC from medium manganese steel melt.The TiC may contribute to the heterogeneous nuclei of fine austenite crystallization,to the retardation of dislocation movement as well as to pile-up and proliferate the dislocations,thus,the matrix of the as-cast steel will be effectively strength- ened.It was also found that the TiC can be acted as the heterogeneous nuclei of the nodular eutectic carbide formation and caused the dispersion o fan abundance of the carbide in the interstices between austenite dendrite arms.

By calculation of thermodynamics,analysis of crystal structure and study of TEM and eletron probe,it is first discovered that SiO2 can be acted as one of the heterogeneous nu- clei for lamellar intergorowth eutectic(austenite and cementite)crystallizing in modified as-cast medium manganese steel.

Influence of Carbides and Strain-induced Martensite on Wear Resistance of Austenitic Medium Manganese Steels

The abrasive wear behaviour of austenitic medium manganese steels was studied under weak corrosion-abrasive wear simulating the liner plate in wet metallic ore bail mill under non-severe impact-loading working condition. Results show that the work-hardening mechanism and the wear resistance of high carbon austenitic medium manganese steels differ from those of medium carbon austenitic medium manganese steel. Under non-severe impact and weak corrosion-abrasive wear,the wear resistances of high carbon and medium carbon austenitic medium manganese steels are 50-90% and 20-40% higher than that of Hadfield steel respectively.

Effect of austenization temperature on the microstructure evolution of the medium manganese steel (0.2C-5Mn) during ART-annealing

Microstructure evolution during ART-annealing (austenite reverted transformation annealing) of 0.2C-5Mn steel processed by austenitation at different temperatures was examined by SEM, TEM and XRD. It was demonstrated that the initial microstructures resulted from austenization at different temperatures strongly affect the microstructure evolution during followed ART-annealing, even the ultrafine grained ferrite/austenite duplex structure with about 30% austenite could be obtained after long time ART-annealing in all cases. Austenization in the intercritical region (between Ac1 and Ac3) gave a duplex structure after quenching, which was nearly not affected by followed annealing process. However, high temperature austenization (above Ac3) resulted in a full martensite structure after quenching, which gradually transformed into a ferrite/austenite duplex structure during the following annealing process. Based on the analysis of austenite fraction and carbon concentrate, it was found that not only carbon partitioning but also manganese partitioning in the austenite affected the stability of austenite and even dominated the development of lamellar ferrite and austenite duplex structure during intercritical annealing with different times. At last an austenite lath nucleation and thickening model was proposed to describe the microstructure evolution of medium mangenese steel during ART-annealing.

Formability of TRIP/TWIP Steel Containing Manganese of 18.8%

The mechanical property and forming limit experiments were carried out on a high manganese TRIP/TWIP steels with 18.8% manganese. And the forming limit diagram was obtained. This high manganese steel shows outstanding mechanical properties combining high strength and good formability. Its FLD0 is about 38%. The effects of conventional mechanical property on the FLD0 were analyzed. With the contents of Mn increasing, FLD0 increases, which indicates TWIP effect is advantageous to enhance formability. Combining with three classical models and volume invariable principle, a FLD model was established, which fits high manganese steels very well.

Manuscript received 30 July 1999 Abstract The shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) of a manganese steel part as a crossing of railway track to a carbon steel part as the rails of the railroad is the welding of dissimilar steel. It are was known that it is not possible to the the rail of railroad directly to the cross- ing of railway track made from a steel containing about 14% of manganese (wt. ) because of so many differences between the two kinds of steels such as composition, microstructure,mechanical properties and weldability.A method was used to solve the problem by presetting an intermediate layer on each side of the joint and other special procedures were used.The result of test indicated that a good weld joint was obtained.

DEFORMATION AND WORK HARDENING OF HADFIELD MANGANESE STEEL

The work hardening of Hadfield manganese steel arises mainly form two causes;1)a large amount of twinning makes perfect dislocations or Shockley dislocations to be blocked at the coherent twin boundaries.2)the deformation leads to strong unsymmetrical distortion due to the occurrence of a large number gf Mn-C pairs or Mn-vacancy carbon-carbon cluster.It has been demonstrated by TEM observation and internal friction tests.As deformation pro- ceeds,the slip constantly accomodates twinning shear giving rise to stress relaxation.Thus, the Hadfield steel exhibits both rapid work hardening and good ductility.

MODULATED STRUCTURES AND ORDERING STRUCTURES IN ALLOYING AUSTENITIC MANGANESE STEEL

The microstructure of Fe-10Mn-2Cr-1.5C alloy has been investigated with transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometer. The superlattice diffraction spots and satellite reflection pattrens have been observed in the present alloy, which means the appearence of the ordering structure and modulated structure in the alloy. It is also proved by X-ray diffraction analysis that the austenite in the alloy is more stable than that in traditional austenitic manganese steel. On the basis of this investigation,it is suggested that the C-Mn ordering clusters exist in austenitic manganese steel and the chromium can strengthen this effect by linking the weaker C-Mn couples together,which may play an important role in work hardening of austenitic manganese steel.

The effect of C,Mn and heat-treatment on work-hardening of austenitic Mn steel and the work-hardening mechanism have been investigated under non-severe impact loading condition.The results show that the ability of work-hardening in- creases with the increase of C and aging tempera- ture but decreases with Mn.The work-hardening with high austenitic stability results mainly from dislocations,and that with low austenitic stability results mainly from combined effects of strain-in- duced martensite and high density of dislocations under non-severe impact loading conditions.The wear resistance of medium manganese steel (Mn7) is 1.64-2.46 times that of Hadfield steel (Mnl3).
